Grade 12 Applied English

This course covers a variety of genres for different purposes and audiences using conventions of the English language. It uses a range of texts to identify themes, characterization, language use and literary styles as intended by the author. This course provides a range of sources for research and evaluation. It also applies as much as possible the approaches used in the conventional education in creating imaginative and functional texts to equate the learning process of distance students with their counterparts in the classroom in a variety of literary, visual and even electronic forms and conventions, integrating the basic language skills – reading, writing, listening, speaking – into the modules. 

This Course consists of three Modules:

Module 1: Applied Writing

Module 2: Focus on Literature

Module 3: Biography

Each Module is divided into Topics which include all the information you need for this course. You must have a dictionary and a thesaurus. This course has been designed to comply with the existing National Department of Education syllabus on Applied English.

Grade 12 Applied English Module 3

UNIT SUMMARY
In this unit you will learn to analyse the different language techniques with regard to the
different non-fiction genre. You will also able to identify and critically appraise
autobiographical and biographical features. You will view documentaries, biographical and
autobiographical films and learn skills to evaluate them in a non-biased perspective. In
addition, you will also experience writing your autobiography and apply the different
techniques and language features in writing. This unit will taken you beyond the basics of your writing process. You will also learn to think like an editor; by structuring and examining your writings.

Unit 3 will give you a chance to view and analyse non-fiction films. It will enable you to
practice your viewing skills and strategies in order to interpret non-fiction film clips. You
will also develop your ability to establish connection between audience, purpose and subject
matter in film making.

Furthermore, it will make you acquaint and inform you of the lives of some important people in
the society like Oodgerro and Martin Luther King, Jr. Allow to appreciate and follow their
contributions to the society. Moreover, it will teach you to improve your thinking skills using
Edward de Bono’s Six Thinking Hats and able to conceptualize ideas using these Six Thinking
Hats.

Finally, as you complete this unit, you do not just equip yourself with the skills and
knowledge in writing non-fiction genre, but you will be encouraged and inspired to further
your writing and analytical skills which may eventually lead you to a career in literary
writing, journalism and other fields of mass media.
