Papua New Guinea is a multi-cultural society and multi-culturalism is a feature of our highly globalised world. You are more likely to encounter and to live and work with people from a different culture now than your ancestors a hundred years ago.

This unit, Cultural Studies Part 1, through its various reading passages, summaries, explanations, videos and other leaning activities,aimed at opening the world of literature for you as a student. It introduces concepts and principles that govern four major literary genres: Poetry, short stories drama and novels. You would encounter these literary works whenever you read for study or for leisure and make the unknit all the more important. Welcome to online Module 11. 2. In this unit the media will open up a world for you. The mass media is a means of communicating to a large number of people. Print, Television and radio, the traditional forms of media, help us found out about current events that happened in other parts of the country and even opposite side of the world. The media in most countries, even Papua New Guinea, is the most common source of materials for reading. Your exposure to the materials can also help improve your use and understanding of English language. It is important that you understand the features of different kinds of media texts and the techniques used by those who prepared them in order to convey their messages.
